The article examines the architectural features of the fortress city of Kalush, one of the oldest cities in Western Ukraine, located in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. With the granting of Magdeburg rights in the sixteenth century, Kalush became an important commercial and cultural center. It had a great defense potential - a fortified fortress city of the sixteenth century, laid out as an ideal city with a regular layout and a Starosta castle. However, the architectural and urban planning heritage of this period is hardly visible in modern buildings. The defensive fortifications have been leveled. The buildings were almost completely destroyed during the First and Second World Wars. Not a single object has survived on the territory where the castle was located.
The cartographic sources were analyzed and compared with the modern topographic base to identify the fortifications of the fortress. Field surveys were conducted, and a partially preserved regular planning structure, including historic streets and defensive elements, was identified. Based on the results of the study, a proposal for the regeneration of the fortress city of the XVI-XVIII centuries was developed.
The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the importance of preserving valuable architectural elements of the defense system and the historical area of the city, to stop their further destruction by introducing comprehensive measures for protection, preservation and regeneration.
