The development of the modem information society results in an ever-growing demand for information networks. The existing networks, however, are not targeted towards a comprehensive treatment of the environmental issues in their spatial reference. In reply to such demand, the author puts forward to utilize the existing network of Biosphere Reserves encompassing the environmentally most valuable areas of the Earth as a platform for creating a World Geographical Information System for Biosphere Reserves. Such a system could be set up by integrating national information systems. The author hopes that, in future, it will be possible to broaden the network by the data pertaining to other valuable areas. Such activities will warrant a development towards a more complete satisfaction of the society's informational needs in this respect.
