The article explores the features of modern architecture in the historically formed environment of city Lviv. Examples of combining classical styles with contemporary trends in other cities of Ukraine and abroad were also studied.
We determined criteria, by which materials, facades, appropriateness, and relevance of structures were evaluated and compared, as well as their regional location, historical significance, existing surroundings, and the creation of a new street ensemble were considered.
Modern architecture develops in different directions and differs from the classical styles that we are used to seeing in the city of Lviv. The difference between styles becomes apparent when buildings built side to side are made by different authors in different eras, with different designs, materials and trends. The purpose of my article is to explore different ways of combining architectural styles, and find the one that correctly combines the facades of such buildings, create an attractive composition, and not destroy the already existing environment, which is especially important in Lviv, since it is one of the best examples of urban planning in Ukraine.
Architects, both working and students, were interviewed along with ordinary people; their opinions were analyzed and taken into account.
The article strives to spread awareness about different architectural styles and expand readers’ point of view, invoking them to reflect and have interest in their own and others’ works for their own improvement. The successful and unfortunate decisions of the creators were also thought of.
The issues covered in the article are especially relevant in our conditions, when, after the victory, the cities of Ukraine will need restoration and reconstruction, and architects will be faced with the problem of combining the architecture of their ancestors with modern styles and trends without destroying the general appearance of the city's streets.
