Based on the available materials of archaeological research, architectural surveys, and documents on emergency and restoration works, the article examines the problems associated with the attribution, research, preservation, and restoration of historical and architectural monuments that have been repeatedly rebuilt. The Round Tower with the Bastion and the Barbican of the Medzhybizh fortress are laid at the base of the analysis. A review and brief analysis of previous studies of the structures mentioned above has been carried out over the past fifty years.

The remains of defensive structures are an important component of the holistic perception of the historical context of many settlements in Ukraine. Local administrations show interest in creating graphic reconstructions of monuments as one of the easiest means of popularizing the historical heritage of the area.

One of the examples of preserved bastion fortifications on the territory of
Ukraine is the castle in Yahilnytsia. Аt presents on the territory of the castle escarpment is
preserved, which forms the contour of the double tenal front and adjacent half-bastions with
curtains. The aim of the research is to generalize information about the genesis and type of
defensive fortifications of the castle in Yahilnytsia.
Castles in Hust, Halych, Chernihiv (Ukraine) have been chosen as analogues for the
