DEMOLITION OF THE STANISLAW FORTRESS IN 1812: ANALYSIS OF CARTOGRAPHIC AND TEXTUAL SOURCES

The article introduces three archival primary sources into scholarly circulation for the first time. These sources are preserved in the Military Archive of the Austrian State Archives in Vienna (Österreichische Staatsarchiv. Kriegsarchiv. Wien) and include: the map «Plan der demolirten Festung Stanislawow. Durchshnitle nach den Linien», 1812 (Plan of the Demolished Fortress of Stanislawow. Cross-sections along the Lines), and two text documents – «Demolirung der Befestigung Stanislawow. Mineurs Detachement.

OUTLINE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF EUROPEAN FORTIFICATIONS IN THE 15th-19th CENTURIES

The study of the evolution of the development of defensive European forts as a monument of military architecture is relevant nowadays. Wars caused the construction of fortifications to protect the territories of cities. The evolution of medieval fortresses was accompanied by technical progress in construction tools and techniques and the technical skills of military engineers. Fortification complexes in Europe over the centuries, with the development of firearms, were modernized and improved in accordance with the requirements of the time.
