There are numerous open-air museums worldwide, and public spaces often incorporate both permanent and temporary outdoor exhibitions. Based on studies conducted on open-air museums and exhibitions in Vienna and its surrounding areas, as part of the academic cooperation program TU Vienna – TU Lviv, this article explores the European approach to the architectural and spatial organization of such institutions.

In Ukraine, there is no holistic perception of historical and cultural environments of monumental ensembles and complexes as an object of protection and use today. Their preservation will be effective only when the understanding of the object of protection is extended to the boundaries of the cultural landscape, including all its valuable elements. The best way to implement this concept is to include cultural landscapes in the open-air museum exhibition as its integral, active, and living element.

Ukraine has a huge historical and cultural potential. Unfortunately, their usage is ineffective. State support for museums is limited, therefore the problem of developing programs for their creation, maintenance and activity arises accordingly. New approaches to exhibiting are changing the approach to the architectural and spatial organization of the museum. Remaining an educational institution, the museum attracts a large mass of the population, becomes a large cultural and educational center, where the museum function becomes only one of many parts of the general program.

The characteristics of different types of multimedia exhibition technologies are investigated in this article. The author considers the features of virtual and real historical and architectural environment interaction. The peculiarities of space formation of the open-air museums, created on the basis of architectural monuments, with the help of multimedia technical means are analyzed. The feasibility of multimedia exhibition technologies application for the open-air museums is substantiated.
