Recommendations on application of generative AI

The editorial policy of the journal regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is based on the EU AI Act, as well as on statements by COPE, WAME, JAMA Network, and recommendations by ICMJE.

The Editorial Board of the journal acknowledges that the use of AI poses a challenge to the academic community in terms of compliance with professional ethics and academic integrity principles, as well as the protection of intellectual property.

Based on the policy of adhering to these principles, the Editorial Board of the journal declares that the use of AI in writing the text of scientific articles is unacceptable; articles whose text is created using AI are tantamount to plagiarism and are not considered.

The use of AI in creating a scientific article is allowed to perform mechanical processes and routine operations, such as arranging bibliography, compiling lists or tables, automatic coding, etc. If these AI tools are used in the article, this must be indicated in the text with references to the programs used.

Any other use of AI to create a scientific article submitted to the journal is unacceptable.

The procedure for identifying and establishing facts of violation of academic integrity, the procedure for considering the fact of violation of academic integrity, the procedure for submitting an appeal and its consideration, regarding cases of unfair use of AI, is carried out in accordance with the Journal's Procedure for Retracting Published Articles.

AI should be used cautiously for manuscript evaluation. Editors should be aware that using AI technology in the processing of manuscripts may violate confidentiality.” It’s therefore essential that any peer reviewers who want to use AI tools to facilitate their review, obtain permission from the journal editor beforehand. Uploading an entire manuscript to an unauthorized platform or AI software could be considered a breach of confidentiality.

Moreover, just as authors have to be careful about the accuracy and objectivity of AI-generated text, peer reviewers too need to be aware that AI-generated peer review comments could be inaccurate, flawed, or biased.

Bottom line

So, no tool can be a substitute for your own knowledge, experience, and expertise.
