The article traces the evolution of Winnipeg’s Ukrainian diaspora media, moving from newspapers and magazines to the creation of the web portal and a Facebook group.

Throughout its history, Ukrainian media in Canada have played essential roles in the lives of Ukrainian-Canadians. First and foremost, consolidating, being and remaining a factor, enabling Ukrainian-Canadians to feel belonging to the Ukrainian ethnic group, stay in touch with their homeland, discuss the issues of diaspora life and support people’s rights to receive information in their mother tongue. The study of ethnic media sources is an important aspect for understanding the life and problems of diasporas, their aspirations, challenges and identities in a different socio-cultural environment.

There were at least 235 Ukrainian periodicals during the century of existence of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada. The founders of Ukrainian-Canadian media were political parties and movements. They aimed at attracting members of the diaspora to support their ideology and unite religious communities, professional unions to preserve Ukrainian-Canadian national identity.

With the development of modern media technologies, the financial crises of the last decades, the tendencies of the printing media have shifted towards a reduction of circulation, termination of some editions, the beginning of electronic correspondence on the Internet, and later the transition to most online-only publications. More people in the world are receiving information through their smartphones, and therefore are abandoning paper copies of their favourite editions. The electronic media is removing the financial burden from print-based newspapers, making it possible to submit news articles more quickly, accurately determine audience preference, and offer instant feedback from readers. Ukrainian Canadian media also follow similar changes. How Ukrainian immigrants in Winnipeg are sharing information is now in line with the current trends in the media market. Namely — the number of print-based media is decreasing, and communication is increasingly being transmitted via various Internet platforms.
