Розглянуто концепцію, яка дозволяє дослідити поведінку відкритих (біологічних) систем за допомогою законів неврівноваженої (класичної) термодинаміки. Показано, що другий закон термодинаміки можна застосовувати до відкритих систем за умови, що при розгляді всієї системи (континуум) «відкрита система–середовище» повна ентропія зростає.
