CLEANING TECHNOLOGY OF ALABASTER STONE (USING BAPTISMAL FONT FROM THE DORMITION CHURCH IN LVIV AS AN EXAMPLE)

The alabaster font from the Dormition Church in Lviv was sent to the
restoration in 2019. For a long time it served as a flowerbed, it was whitewashed several times,
split into two parts and fastened with a metal wire. The article describes the conservation state
of the object, presents the results of petrographic and thermal analysis of alabaster of the font
basin. The study found that the main problem of cleaning is the removal of carbonized lime
incrustation. The experimental studies on the effect on alabaster of various means of cleaning
and effectiveness of these means in the dirt removal process were carried out.
The studies were conducted in two stages: on separate alabaster samples in order to
identify possible destructive effects of chemical materials, and the second stage – an experiment
directly on the object of restoration, using tested and safe means for alabaster. It was identified
that chemical means cannot be used in cleaning the stone from whitewash, and if used
carelessly, can have a destructive effect on the structure of alabaster. The tested latex films
remove dust layers well, and latex film Arte Mundit Reiniger-Piling Typ II, III, V Komponente
A developed by Remmers showed a satisfactory result in the removal of carbonized lime
incrustation. Tables and photo fixation describe and present all results of the study. The
technological process of cleaning the alabaster basin of the baptismal font is formed based on
the substantiated experimental studies.
