The article presents the results of research carried out in the western areas of the modern city of Dnipro, Dnipropetrovsk region (Ukraine), where the palanquin fortress of Novy Kodak was located during the 17th–18th centuries. The relevance of the study is determined by the intensive transformation of this territory, which today is occupied by a private low-rise residential sector and is actively affected by both natural and anthropogenic factors. For the purposes of protecting the historic settlement and the architectural monument of national importance — the Nicholas Church in Kodaky — a series of field and archival studies were conducted in 2020 by the Institute of Cultural Heritage of the All-Ukrainian Council for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Kyiv). These works were part of the preparation of scientific and project documentation for the protection zones of the monument (State Protection No. 1078), located at 108 Fortechna Street, Dnipro.

The aim of the research is to highlight the results of architectural and urban planning studies of the spatial structure of the former fortification, to identify elements of fortification remains preserved within the urban environment, and to determine protection zones of the monument and the archaeological layer. On the basis of field surveys, photographic documentation, and analysis of cartographic and literary sources, the localization of fortifications and several public structures both inside and outside the fortress was clarified. The boundaries of protection zones were established, and practical recommendations for the regime of use of the territory were developed.

The results confirm that the territory of the Novy Kodak fortress (not to be confused with the Old Kodak fortress) is closely integrated with the planning structure and modern cityscape. The Nicholas Church, historically connected with the former Cossack settlement, remains the central architectural landmark within the fortress perimeter, embodying the sacral continuity of the site and marking the historic center of the palanquin town. The study emphasizes the necessity of revalorization of Novy Kodak as an important element of cultural heritage and the tourist potential of the city and region.

The conclusions underline the importance of archaeological investigation of the cultural layer, which may contribute to reconstructing the local collective memory through material evidence and strengthen the perception of Novy Kodak as a key location of regional and national history. The conducted research resulted in the approval of scientific and project documentation by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, enabling the integration of updated protection zones into the Historical and Architectural Reference Plan of Dnipro. The proposed measures include restoration of the monument, rehabilitation of vegetation, reconstruction of the planning system, and regeneration of the surrounding environment. These steps are aimed at preserving the urban and spatial qualities of the site, ensuring sustainable protection, and reinforcing its role in the cultural landscape of Dnipro.
