The dependence of the sighting error when measuring zenith distances from the form of the sighting purposes is considered. Experimental observations have shown that sighting of geodetic marks on ordinary sighting cylinders is performed with high accuracy only for small distances up to 5 km. With an increase in range up to 10 km, the sighting error increases and remains almost unchanged when viewed along horizontally extended objects.
