THE VISUAL HERITAGE OF VADYM SHCHERBAKIVSKYI IS THE PRIMARY SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE GENESIS OF UKRAINIAN SACRED CONSTRUCTION, FOLK ART AND ETHNOGRAPHY (BASED ON ARCHIVAL MATERIALS OF THE INSTITUTE OF NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE)

Photographs and negatives of V. Scherbakivskyi are an important source for studying the genesis of Ukrainian sacred construction, architecture, folk art, and ethnography. They are the basis for the restoration of the artistic tradition, remain relevant, and go far beyond the boundaries of historiographical discourse.

FOLK WOODEN CHURCHES OF THE SKOLEVSHCHYNA

On the whole of Europe, the largest and most valuable examples of wooden construction have survived in Ukraine. In the Skolevshchyna and Turkivshchyna in the XVIII century a process of creating a new type of sacred object took place, that is, its Western-Ukrainian interpretation of the vertical composition of the church structure was going on. This process lasted for almost two centuries and ended with the fact that in these two regions formed its original volumetric planning decision, which later became known as the Boyk-type church.

SCHOOLS OF FOLK TEMPLE BUILDING, TYPES AND GROUPS OF CARPATHIAN CHURCHES

The author has identified four schools of folk temple construction along the Carpathian region (viz. Boiko, Hutsul, Lemko and Transcarpathian ones). Within the borders of Boiko historio-ethnographical massif there have been 2 types and 3 groups of churches, 1 type and 1 group have been spread in Hutsul land, 8 types in Lemko area. 8 groups of temples have been known within the borders of Transcarpathian historio-geographical region.

HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CITY SKOLE BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The first written mention of Skole - a small Boyk settlement in the Carpathians dates from March 5, 1397. Nearly 1660, near the settlement of Skole, Prince Alexander Yanush Zaslavskyj lays a town and calls it his honor - Alexandria. The town is stretched in the basin of a lens shaped length of 3.5 km, a width of 1.5 km. The plan of the city had a geometric shape, close to the square, with a rectangular-mesh architectural-planning scheme. The center of planning composition and communication node of the city of Skole was a square market square, in the middle of which was the Town Hall.
