Assessment of policies on cycling and walking in post-war restoration (based on Ukraine and Ethiopia)

War and military conflicts cause widespread destruction of urban and transport infrastructure, limiting people’s mobility, access to services, and contributing to a rising number of people with disabilities (PWDs). In such conditions, due to the destruction of critical infrastructure systems and severe fuel shortages, active mobility (walking and cycling) becomes a vital survival strategy and a tool for socio-economic resilience.

RESTORATION CHALLENGES OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE DAMAGED BY RUSSIA’S ARMED AGGRESSION: RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN LVIV

The article synthesises the results of damage assessment, research, conservation and restoration interventions undertaken at listed sites damaged by Russian missile attacks in 2023-2025 in Lviv. In particular, the analysis draws on the restoration of the multi-apartment residential buildings at 62-68 Stryiska Street (missile strike of 6 July 2023), the multi-apartment residential buildings at 44 Konovaltsia Street and at 7 Melnyka Street (former urban villa, strike of 4 September 2024).

REVITALIZATION OF CITIES DAMAGED BY RUSSIAN AGGRESSION IN EASTERN UKRAINE

This article addresses the challenge of revitalizing Ukrainian cities damaged by Russian aggression, particularly in the eastern regions. The research examines not only methods of physical reconstruction but also comprehensive approaches to urban environment renewal that incorporate social, cultural, and ecological aspects.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT OF THE «SUNNY HOUSE» – AN ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENT IN LVIV, AFTER RUSSIAN MISSILE ATTACK

The article reports on damage assessment of Ludwig Heller’s House – one of the architectural monuments affected by the Russian missile attack on the city of Lviv on September 4, 2024. The authors took part in the on the ground research first as part of the local commission on September 6, and later within the joint UNESCO-ICCROM mission on September 2-5, 2024.

ANALYSIS OF ARCHITECTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS OF SINGLE-FAMILY BUILDINGS DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF THE WAR

During the regular shelling of cities and villages, a significant part of single-family houses throughout Ukraine were destroyed and damaged. In the article, a visual analysis of the destruction of private housing is carried out and architectural and constructive solutions are identified, which during new construction can make the house more reliable and safer for living in conditions of war. In the course of the study, methods of comparative analysis were used. The article can be used as a reference material for designing a new private home.

CURRENT TRENDS IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION AT THE DEPARTMENT OF DAE OF LVIV POLYTECHNIC NATIONAL UNIVERSITY DURING THE WAR AND AFTER THE VICTORY

As of the beginning of 2023, the destruction of many facilities and the environment as a result of the war unleashed by the Russian aggressor in Ukraine has made it urgent to rebuild everything lost not only in peacetime, after the victory, but also now, when active hostilities are underway. The challenge of today is to quickly and effectively restore everything that has been destroyed and create new opportunities for the near and far future.
