Superabsorbent Hydrogel from Extracted Oil Palm Frond Waste Cellulose Using Microwave Irradioation for Cadmium Ion Removal from Aqueous Solution

This research report facile approach on dispersion of cellulose fiber extracted from oil palm frond waste in a “green-solution” prepared by using urea and sodium hydroxide while the polymerization is carried out using microwave to form hydrogels. Effects of adding cellulose was determined by comparing the swelling degree between 0% and 2% cellulose hydrogel. Results showed that swelling ratio enhanced by the presence of cellulose. SEM images exposed that hydrogel with cellulose has rough surface compared to the hydrogels without cellulose.

Determination of Heavy Elements (Pb, Cd, Cu and Cr) Concentration in some Water Sources

This study focuses on identifying some of the heavy and toxic elements concentration in several sources of water in Diyala Governorate in Iraq, such as the Diyala River and the Khіrisan River. The samples of tap water and bottled drinking water were taken three water wells from and two companies. The elements under study were: lead, cadmium, copper and chromium. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy has been used to determine the concentrations.

Adsorption of Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solutions on Modified Sorbents

Some new modified sorbents based on opoka from Astrakhan region were obtained. A comparative study of the sorption of cadmium ions on the surfaces of the sorbents was made. Also the static adsorption isotherm of substances from aqueous solutions was studied. The change of enthalpy, isobaric-isothermal potential and entropy of sorption and kinetics of cadmium ions sorption from water solutions were calculated. The results of the study can be used for the water purification from cadmium ions

Cadmium electrochemical reduction in CdCl2 solutions in dimethylsulfoxide and morphology of cathode deposit

Cadmium reduction in solutions at steady-state and pulse electrolysis has been studied. It was established that polarization results in cadmium formation at potentials 1 V larger than equilibrium one. In 0.25-1.0 molar solutions of CdCl2 concentrated depolarization leads to removement of the beginning of cadmium reduction by 0.3 V. Photographs of SEM are presented and effect of electrolysis characteristics on the morphology of cathode deposit is shown.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Cadmium(II) Dichloroaquasalicylidenesemicarbazone

Cadmium(II) complex with salicyl aldehyde semicarbozone (Н2L) has been synthesized. Based on elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy its composition – [Cd∙Н2L∙H2O∙Cl2] – has been established. The complex crystal structure has been examined using XRD analysis. The coordination polyhedron of cadmium atom is a distorted octahedron, where two cis-positions are occupied by oxygen atoms of water molecule and carbamide fragment of H2L molecule, other positions are occupied by chlorine atoms.
