Potential advantages of a colour photomap at scale 1:20 000 are presented on the example of the Polish Tatra tourist photomap. Photomaps at this scale preserve still fine terrain representation unprecedented in traditional maps yet allowing to portray a considerable area within single sheet of printable paper. The photographic image of the terrain illegible without cautious interpretation can be noticeably improved when the cartographic approach supported by a computer is applied. The results of image interpretation once done may be made permanently visible when graphic changes are introduced to the original image. With the main landscape components made distinct by new coloration, the veiled objects marked, and suitable number of places names added the photomap gains legibility.
