THE RUINS OF THE CASTLE: RETHINKING

The article presents a variable range of meanings of the concept “ruin”. The castle in the state of ruins as a historical monument is considered, and the importance of preserving this type of objects actually in the state of ruins is emphasized, explaining this by the concept of “places of memory” by P. Nora, considering ruined castles as monuments-relics and comprehending their significance in literature and folklore.

TOWN OF DOBROMIL AND ITS CASTLES: AN ATTEMPT OF RECONSTRUCTION THE PLANNING STRUCTURE FOR THE 17TH CENTURY

In this article we try to reconstruct the planning structures of town of Dobromil in Rus` (Rythenia) province of Kingdom of Poland at the time of 17th century. Dobromil (ukr. Dobromyl) was the main private city of Herburt family in the valley of the river Strvyazh in the Sambir district. We perform attempts of a hypothetical planning reconstruction of this city on the basis of an analysis of a number of historical maps of the late 18th and 19th centuries.

A CASTLE IN A STATE OF LONG-TERM RUIN AND MEASURES AIMED AT ITS PRESERVATION

In the article, the definitions “castle in a state of long-term ruin” and “architectural revitalization” are given. A list of measures aimed at preserving architectural monuments from the standpoint of their application on castles in a state of long-term ruin is considered.

HISTORICAL AND URBAN RESEARCH OF DEFENSE COMPLEXES OF VINNITSA OF RUS’-LITHUANIAN ERA (14th-16th CENTURIES)

In this article for the first time the methods of the complex historical and town-planning
analysis of urban defense complexes of the city of Vinnytsia formed during the Grand Duchy
of Lithuania is applied. The author compares chronicle and act sources, historical cartography
and the results of modern field research to establish the location of ancient castle and urban
fortifications. The thesis about the formation of the primary urban structure of Vinnytsia
during the Lithuanian era according to the principles of urban planning on Rus’ law is proved.

FORTIFICATIONS OF THE 16th−17th CENTURIES OF THE CASTLE IN YAHILNYTSIA (NAHIRYANKA VILLAGE, CHORTKIV DISTRICT, TERNOPIL REGION)

One of the examples of preserved bastion fortifications on the territory of
Ukraine is the castle in Yahilnytsia. Аt presents on the territory of the castle escarpment is
preserved, which forms the contour of the double tenal front and adjacent half-bastions with
curtains. The aim of the research is to generalize information about the genesis and type of
defensive fortifications of the castle in Yahilnytsia.

FORMATION OF DEFENSIVE FORTIFICATIONS OF THE CHRONICLE PLAV (ZHVANETS) IN THE 12TH-18TH CENTURIES

For the first time in Ukrainian historiography, the authors of the article pay
attention to the urban genesis of the Podilya town of Zhvanets, which has historically been
formed as an important border point. Due to the geographical location and relief features of
the area, the states to which it belonged, saw it as strategic. Despite this, in the scientific
literature there is a little attention payed to the issue of urban development of the town, as a
result of which Zhvanets (as of 2020 - the center of Zhvanets United Territorial Community)

REVITALIZATION OF CASTLE RUINES: EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE

Depending on the state of architectural object preservation and information
how it was looking in a certain historical period, a decision to preserve and restore the building
is made. It is important the building to function and to be attractive to tourists as the life that

The authors of the article focus on the urban activities of the princes of Zbarazh of the senior branch. Special attention is paid to cities whose location and fortification are directly associated with representatives of the princely family. An attempt is made to find the principle that guided the Princes when choosing the city and choosing the method of fortifications.
