The article analyzes the light-spatial composition of a number of Greek Catholic churches of the Ukrainian diaspora designed and built by the famous Canadian architect Radoslav Zhuk. A set of rules and principles used by the architect to create a sacred atmosphere in the interior space of church buildings by means of natural light is established. In general, the light-space composition studied of eight churches built by Radoslav Zhuk in the second half of the 20th century. The work of Santiago Calatrava is characterized by biomorphic imitation combined with engineering thought, an approach that has made him one of the foremost and renowned architects of contemporary times. The architect employed principles of symbolic imitation and historical resonance. The main form, in this project, for imitation was taken from the icon of the Virgin Mary with a Child, which the architect skillfully transformed into the silhouette of a church, while the idea of geometric analysis of the Virgin's Face with a halo inspired the creation of the plan.

Based on domestic and foreign experience, an analysis of the natural light filling of the sacred space of Modern Greek Catholic churches in Ukraine and abroad. Similarities and differences in the formation of the light environment of the modern church, compared with the traditional one, have been establish.

The architecture of Modern Greek Catholic churches in Ukraine significantly influenced by the traditions of architectural formation of other branches of Christianity. This influence manifested primarily in the organization of their lighting environment.

In each historical period, light played an important mystical role in the creation of the sacred space of the temple, and was and is an integral part of religious ritual. Light is an architectural phenomenon, the formative and communicative element of the spatial structure of the temple, the most important factor in the perception of space and layout of the temple. On the basis of historical graphic materials analysis, a number of Don region sacral objects were identified as those whose style and character are undoubtedly connected with the traditions of Dnieper Ukraine architecture. The influence of the Dnieper region architecture in this region is mainly associated with the main military cathedral in Cherkassk (now Starocherkassk), but, the presented materials shows a much wider scale of this phenomenon within the framework of wooden construction.

Understanding the tradition, innovation and national identity of examples of wooden temple buildings, in particular, Ukrainian churches, certain trends are identified, which in their essence become the main ones, regarding the intensity of development in temple construction. The factors of tradition and innovation are identified as important mediums for establishing the national identity of the image of wooden temple buildings, and their expression in the modern temple-building process of creating a Christian shrine.

The article describes issues related to the shaping of architectural objects in urban spaces and in the spaces of nature, where the surroundings – context – relations with nature and the built environment constitute an important functional and spatial connection.

У дослідженні розглянуто чинники традиції та новаторства в архітектурі української церкви. Вони слугують підґрунтям для виявлення, усвідомлення та ідентифікації феномену національної ідентичності у формотворенні образу українського храму-церкви як взірця творчої думки і спадщини українців.
