Давні карти залишаються малодослідженими документами, які несуть особливу просторову інформацію про стан закартованої території. До такого роду документів належить карта Рудольфа Ріттера фон Отто 1772 року, зокрема її лист (Litt: I. No: 9), на якому відображено місто Львів та його околиці. Ця карта слугувала і буде слугувати об’єктом міждисциплінарних досліджень істориків, географів, архітекторів, містобудівників. Дослідження виконане у ГІС способом співставлення досліджуваної карти із іншими картографічними матеріалами останньої третини XVIII століття, а також із сучасною топоосновою. Вказано на суттєві просторові спотворення у відображенні об’єктів на карті, встановлено ймовірні причини цього. Ідентифіковано розташування палацу Августа Мошинського не на території історичної забудови Національного університету "Львівська Політехніка", а поряд із сучасною вулицею Богдана Хмельницького у Львові. Пояснено особливості розквартирування австрійських військ у Львові та у його околицях у 1772 році. Карта Р. Р. фон Отто є цінним історичним і картографічним джерелом у містобудівних дослідженнях, адже містить багато цінних деталей ситуації (поселення, вулиці і дороги, окремі споруди, пам’ятники та ін.), яких може не бути на інших тогочасних картографічних документа. Зображені на карті ландшафтні елементи, замки та палацово-двірські комплекси колишніх околиць Львова (а нині його периферійних зон) можуть враховуватися в науково-проектних роботах з урбаністичних перетворень, відтворення природних комплексів та регенерації історичного середовища.
