The article is devoted to the research of problems of the functional and planning structure of existing objects of publicly accessible public spaces within the university campuses of the city of Lviv and identifying the main trends in their design and successful functioning. Based on the analysis of the scientific publications and studies that related to this topic, the main aspects of the formation of public space at the universities were presented.

This article examines social contact as an important component of public space in cities. The author emphasizes the physical parameters of space that influence the possibility and quality of social interactions. Street networks and sidewalk accessibility contribute to encounters and communication in densely populated areas, while large open spaces without buildings may reduce the number of social contacts. Space design, such as the presence of public squares and parks, can increase social encounters and make the space more diverse.

The XXI century is a period of fierce competition for material and technical resources, which is a rapid development of innovative technologies and teaching methods. Therefore, the main task for high-quality education today is to create modern multifunctional institutions where people of different ages could get knowledge. The organic combination of educational, scientific and innovative activities in the extracurricular educational process will allow people in educational institutions to master the modern methodology of performing research work.

The world tendencies of popularization of ecological elements of sustainable mobility and the results of their introduction in Lviv on the way to sustainable development are considered in the article. Examples of implementation of the Sustainable Mobility Plan in the city in accordance with the set priorities are given: residents, public transport, ecological means of transportation, private transport. The development of infrastructure for individual environmental means of mobility and public transport is analyzed.

The article describes the design methodology and appropriateness of architectural workshops for student learning and their involvement in participatory planning. As an example, given an architectural workshop that took place in September 2016 in the village Sergiivka, Odessa region at International urban forum "Area for development. Beach and city" with the participation of students and tutors from Odesa, Lviv, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Kyiv.

The article has been devoted to the analysis of the architecture and urban structure of utopian cities and states, their interrelation with social and political aspects in the works of “Republic” and “Laws” by Plato, “Utopia” by T. More and “The City of the Sun” by T. Campanella.

Central market squares are a characteristic feature of many cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Historically, it was formed in such a way that the presence of a market square was a sign of the urban status of a territory. They were laid as perfect geometric forms of the spatial centers of life of citizens, and due to the central location, economic and cultural value, were the core of the city, from which the street network was expanded.

Nowadays, we have a situation in Ukraine, when large companies control the trade market; in this case, small companies have no chance to compete with them. Nevertheless, it should be understood that small shopes carry a very important mission in suburban settlements. In a situation when the property market demanded to sell any free territory for housing development, we got a situation with a deficit of «third places» located close to our houses where we can walk.

На прикладі міста Новояворівськ Львівської області розглянуто проблеми містобудівного розвитку монофункціональних промислових міст, закладених у другій половині ХХ ст. Окреслено потенційні конфлікти сучасної функціонально- планувальної та просторової структури міста та сучасних соцільно-економічних вимог до формування міста.

У статті йдеться про воркшоп як інструмент впливу на функціонування громадського простору в міському середовищі. Визначено його функції, засоби та результати, до яких він приводить. Розглянуто приклад воркшопу з ревіталізації площі Митної у Львові.
