THE CONCEPT OF THE CONSERVATION AND REVATALIZATION OF THE NEW CASTLE IN THE CITY OF KAMIANETS-PODILSKY

The unique castle complex in Kamianets-Podilskyi actually consists of three parts: the Old Castle, the New Castle, and an outer ring of fortifications with a bridge. Built in the 17th century, the New Castle’s fortification complex is the only surviving example in Ukraine of the Dutch school of defensive architecture. The site is an attractive destination for enthusiasts of fortification architecture. Since the 19th century, the New Castle has not been in use and has fallen into ruin. The aim of this study is, based on an analysis of previous research, to create hypothetical graphic reconstructions of the New Castle as it appeared in the 17th century, to analyze the current condition of all castle structures, and to propose a conceptual design solution for the conservation, partial restoration, and revitalization of the complex. Revitalization measures involve the use of new architectural forms and elements to recreate lost structures and parts of the castle. An important aspect of the project is the complete preservation of the authentic structures and elements of the castle complex. In the design, the New Castle will be given a new lease on life through the comfortable landscaping and beautification of the site and the integration of modern needs into it. The recreational area will harmoniously blend into the surrounding environment and complement the visual image of the semi-ruined medieval castle, creating a neat walking park in the castle courtyard and between the walls, as well as a café and hostel in the casemates.
