The study presents a historical and architectural analysis of the former 18th
century barracks complex in Kamianets-Podilskyi (pol. Kamieniec-Podolski), Ukraine.
Reconstruction of the phases of its development, evaluation and valorization of its facilities was
carried out, and a concept for the rehabilitation, conservation and revitalization of the complex
was developed. The building of the barracks is a unique object due to its construction and
foundation in a steep terrain.
The research task consisted of three main items: 1 - develop conservation guidelines; 2 -
analyze foreign projects of revitalization of barracks complexes; 3 - identify the main rules of
conduct in relation to the existing buildings; 4 - develop revitalization concepts for the entire
complex (territory plus buildings).
Historical analysis made it possible to recreate the "biography" of the monument,
observing its development and impact on the environment over time. The project tried to
maximize the attractiveness of the plot's location, architectural values (historical buildings,
original compositional assumptions) and environmental values (canyon, river, topography,
viewing openings). The functional revitalization program envisages the creation of a program in
which old and new architecture, nature and the architectural context will harmoniously cooperate
with each other, reviving this unique, forgotten object and attracting more and more people here
to use the services of the balneology center. Spending time by customers will be combined with
admiring the views of the fortress and the old town.
The area of the barracks complex occupies a significant part of the old town, therefore its
revitalization, ensuring convenient communication, adapting the old buildings to new functions,
will create a great impulse for the cultural and economic development of the entire city. It is
predicted that the aesthetic values and new functions of the district will attract even more tourists
and new investments.
The barracks were built in 1787 on the site of an older defensive complex - the upper part
of the so-called Ruska Gate. Future archaeological research may change the spatial concepts of
the project towards the creation of an exhibition of archaeological relics.
